How to Use the Casey at the Bat Template (PowerPoint & Canva)

This template is designed to deliver a smooth, storybook-style presentation whether you prefer working on desktop presentation software or in a cloud-based design app. Follow these steps to set up, customize, and present Ernest Lawrence Thayer’s 1888 baseball ballad in either Microsoft PowerPoint or Canva:

Step 1: Open Your Deck in PowerPoint or Canva

  • In Microsoft PowerPoint: Launch the downloaded .pptx file directly. The deck will open in native 16:9 widescreen format with all hand-painted graphics, textured parchment containers, and layered text boxes intact.
  • In Canva: Click the Canva template link to copy the deck into your personal workspace. All visual elements, text boxes, and background art will load directly in your browser or tablet app, ready for cloud editing and live sharing.

Step 2: Customize Stanzas, Prompts, and Teacher Notes

  • Edit the Original Verse: Double-click any parchment scroll to adjust font sizes, highlight specific poetic devices (such as rhyme schemes or metaphors), or swap the original stanzas with summarized reading notes for younger grades.
  • Add Vocabulary Callouts: Use the margins or open parchment space to define historical baseball terms and rich 19th-century vocabulary words like visage, spheroid, haughty grandeur, and melancholy.
  • Insert Comprehension Questions: Add interactive slide prompts asking students to predict what Casey will do next or evaluate his body language as the inning unfolds.

Step 3: Pace the Stanza-by-Stanza Storyboard

  • Follow the Chronological Flow: The slides are sequenced to match the poem’s dramatic arc—starting from Mudville’s 4–2 deficit, building through Flynn and Blake’s base hits, and climaxing at Casey's final strikeout.
  • Build Suspense During Reading: Display each illustration before reading the text aloud to encourage visual analysis and prediction, letting students notice the anxious crowd in the bleachers or Casey’s sneer before hearing the verses.

Step 4: Engage the Room with Interactive Discussion

  • Theatrical Recitation: Have students take turns reading individual stanzas, acting out the umpire's calls, or voicing the roar of the Mudville crowd.
  • Moral & Theme Analysis: Anchor your closing discussion around the final Mudville scoreboard slide to debate the central themes of the ballad—pride, overconfidence, hubris, and dealing with failure.

Step 5: Present Live or Export for Print

  • Live Projection: Run the presentation in full-screen slideshow mode in PowerPoint or use Canva’s "Present" mode to project directly onto smartboards or classroom monitors.
  • Student Handouts & Activity Packets:
    • In PowerPoint, navigate to File > Export > Create PDF/XPS Document.
    • In Canva, click Share > Download > PDF Print.
  • Distribute printed full-color story packets for literature analysis, poetry memorization homework, or homeschool reading logs.
